October newsletter

Another month, another newsletter, with a few links we hope you’ll enjoy reading while you all wait patiently for the launch of Eye 102, our forthcoming type special.

You can now see our recording of an online Type Tuesday from last summer, the launch of Eye 101 with Anette Lenz, Mario Eskenazi, Jim Sutherland & Elizabeth Resnick via our new YouTube channel.

Clockwise from top left: Mario Eskenazi, Jim Sutherland, Montserrat Miranda Ayejes (help with Spanish translation), Anette Lenz and Elizabeth Resnick, with Eye’s John L. Walters and Simon Esterson in the centre.

The next Eye session (virus permitting) will be a real-life event at St Bride Printing Library – not a Type Tuesday, but a Christmas special on Thursday 9 December 2021 at 6.30pm. Look out for more details and a ticket link on our ‘social media channels’, as they say.

The latest post on the Eye blog is Michèle Woodger’s ‘Dreamscapes in miniature’, a review of ‘Shaping Space: Architectural Models Revealed’ at London’s Building Centre.

Thinking about type specials, as we are at the moment, you can now read many more articles from the last one, Eye 98, in full, including ‘Strategy of excess’ (see above), a profile of Hansje van Halem, and ‘Type Now’, about different aspects of type design: Jan Middendorp’s ‘States of independence’; ‘The business of type design’ by the late (and much-missed) Sarah Snaith; and Peter Biľak’s ‘Originality and inspiration’.

Events and shows listed on our Eye Events page include magCulture Live, at London’s Conway Hall on Thursday 4 November; Women's Rights Are Human Rights, a Zoom event, reception talk and tour (including Eye contributor Elizabeth Resnick) on Tuesday 26 October; and the Chaumont Biennale, which runs until Sunday 21 November 2021.

‘Women’s Rights Are Human Rights’, with curators Elizabeth Resnick and Michele Cairella Fillmore plus participating artists, Alice Drueding, Anita Kunz and Parisa Tashakori.

Eye 102 is still in the white heat of production, so that’s all I have time for right now.

Thank you for reading, and keep subscribing.

John L. Walters, editor

PS Save the date – our final event of the year will be on Thursday 9 December 2021.
