It’s an interesting time: the UK is tentatively opening up; we have finally sent Eye 101 to press; and we’ve been able to celebrate with a couple of drinks by the Haggerston Riviera.
This means that if you are a subscriber, your freshly printed copy of Eye 101 will be sent to your studio or home in the next couple of weeks. If you don’t subscribe, now is the time to act (by midnight BST tomorrow, Friday 7 May 2021) and get the next four issues of Eye delivered to your door in a sturdy package.
There have been some changes with international post – especially to the EU – due to Brexit, customs data revisions and the global pandemic. Unfortunately, this means we will have to review all our prices later this year; this may be your last opportunity to get a subscription at the current price.

Have we all been bad designers?’ is a new post on the Eye blog by Richard van der Laken of What Design Can Do (WDCD). The article discusses the role of design in encouraging wastefulness – what WDCD calls the practice of ‘take-make-waste’. WDCD’s recent No Waste Challenge elicited 1409 suggestions of ways to reduce waste and rethink the cycle of production and consumption.

Eye 101 includes profiles of Anette Lenz, Mario Eskenazi, Jim Sutherland and Jacqueline Casey. There is a feature about the way data visualisation became ‘the language of the pandemic’ and a look at the phenomenon of design book crowdfunding – plus an extra-long reviews section.
