Eye 101 has gone to press. Please renew or subscribe now!

It’s an interesting time: the UK is tentatively opening up; we have finally sent Eye 101 to press; and we’ve been able to celebrate with a couple of drinks by the Haggerston Riviera.

This means that if you are a subscriber, your freshly printed copy of Eye 101 will be sent to your studio or home in the next couple of weeks. If you don’t subscribe, now is the time to act (by midnight BST tomorrow, Friday 7 May 2021) and get the next four issues of Eye delivered to your door in a sturdy package.

There have been some changes with international post – especially to the EU – due to Brexit, customs data revisions and the global pandemic. Unfortunately, this means we will have to review all our prices later this year; this may be your last opportunity to get a subscription at the current price.

Keep an eye on the Eye Events page for details of interesting online type and design events on the horizon, including our next St Bride Type Tuesday (8 June), the ambitious Typographics 2021 festival (above) throughout June and the TDC conference Type Drives Communities (tomorrow and Saturday).

Have we all been bad designers?’ is a new post on the Eye blog by Richard van der Laken of What Design Can Do (WDCD). The article discusses the role of design in encouraging wastefulness – what WDCD calls the practice of ‘take-make-waste’. WDCD’s recent No Waste Challenge elicited 1409 suggestions of ways to reduce waste and rethink the cycle of production and consumption.

Eye 101 includes profiles of Anette Lenz, Mario Eskenazi, Jim Sutherland and Jacqueline Casey. There is a feature about the way data visualisation became ‘the language of the pandemic’ and a look at the phenomenon of design book crowdfunding – plus an extra-long reviews section.

It’s easy to renew or subscribe online. Postage and sturdy packaging is included free of charge, and you will never miss another issue. It’s easy to subscribe or renew online. If you don’t want to buy online please email our subscriptions team, or call the subscription team on +44 1371 851885 (though distancing measures mean it may take a while for your call to be answered).

Don’t forget to send your order before midnight on Friday 7 May 2021 to get your copy of Eye 101 as soon as possible.

Very best wishes from Simon, Holly, Janet and John
