Elementary & Junior High News

Faith Academy Students’ Artwork Chosen for Courthouse Exhibit! Eight Faith Academy students got an extra treat on Valentine’s Day when they were honored for creating artwork that will be part of the student art exhibit at the Burnet County Courthouse. Artwork from student across Burnet county was chosen to be part of the current exhibit whose theme is “community.”

The idea of a courthouse art exhibit was the brainchild of Samantha Melvin, who took note of the fact that the same artwork lined the halls of the courthouse year after year. She approached Judge James Oakley with the idea of displaying student art in the courthouse halls, and he was immediately on board. The exhibits have become so popular that Judge Oakley has worked to expand the exhibits so more students will have the chance to participate.

The current group of students was recognized before the Burnet County Commissioner’s Court, where they received certificates of achievement and were photographed with Judge Oakley and the commissioners. They were also invited to attend a community reception that will be held in March.

“We discussed the meaning of the word community in class and from that, these eight students each created their own unique work of art,” said Faith Academy elementary art teacher Bonnie Brown. “I am really proud of the thought and effort they put into each project.”

World Explorer Map - A Sweet Treat!

When students in Lynn Kelley’s 10th grade World History class brought in their student explorer map projects, it was obvious that one group was going to be a favorite among their peers. The assignment was to make a 3-D map of the explorers of the Western Hemisphere. Emily Denton, Paris Brinkley, Hattie Blair decided to take what they had learned in class, mix it in with Emily’s love for baking, and seal the deal with the fact that everyone loves an edible project. Needless to say, their 3-D cake map did not disappoint. The girls had the following to say about their work on the project:

"I have been making cakes as a hobby for a while, and we thought it would be lots of fun to make it into a school project. Everyone loved the cake and it was awesome to eat in class. It was also lots of fun for all of us to creatively put the cake together. We had a great time working together on the cake!" -Emily Denton

"I enjoyed making the cake, it was lots of fun!" -Paris Brinkley

"The cake was a lot of fun to make and we enjoyed working together." -Hattie Blair

Their classmates were not the only ones impressed by their creativity. "This is what is so great about Faith Academy, when students think out of the box and create such an outstanding project!" said Mrs. Kelley.
