Art by A. M. Schaer

I am honored to have 2 pieces juried into the 37th Visual Art Alliance Membership Show. The image above won an Honorable Mention. It's a heavily manipulated photograph that is part of what may become a series dealing with change and loss. I started the series in 2018 after the death of my husband, and started paying more attention to it during Covid lockdown.

For My Students

Squinting at whatever you are painting will help you see value relationships, but you can take this a bit further with software. Notanizer is an easy to use app available for both androids and iphones. It converts color photos to full grayscale images or posterized grayscale images with only a few values. It is very useful if you are having trouble seeing "the big shapes".

For me the computer and the phone are just extensions of my sketchbook. I use the computer a lot for analyzing images and trying out ideas; it saves time and paper. I am considering developing an online class on technology for artists. Anyone interested in this?
Artist's Spotlight: Lesley Bodzy
Last week I was visiting another artist at my old Spring Street stomping grounds and look what I found. Ms. Bodzy builds here images entirely of acrylic "skins". This one has a lovley iridescent sheen that doesn't show up in the photo. You can see more of her work at |
