The Chinese Ministry of Education (MoE), National Health Commission and the National Administration of Disease Prevention and Control issued a document on 14 December requiring local authorities to set up separate test centres for participants who test positive for COVID-19, and emergency test centres for those with abnormal temperature and symptoms for the upcoming National Postgraduate Entrance Exam.

A total of 4.57 million candidates signed up for China’s national postgraduate entrance exam this year, almost double the amount in 2018. Education consultancy New Oriental estimates that the number will continue to increase, passing 5 million next year. Meanwhile, universities that are less famous have welcomed more postgraduate candidates from better universities due to increased competition for test takers.

The UNESCO SDG-Education 2030 Steering Committee held its 2022 annual meeting in Paris from Dec. 8–9 to discuss and adopt strategies for achieving the goals set out at the United Nations Transforming Education Summit (TES). Huai Jinpeng, Minister of Education of China attended the meeting virtually and delivered a speech. He stated that China is willing to build platforms or alliances with any partners to promote digitalisation in the education sector.

The MoE has recently released a draft guideline for the punishment of after-school tutoring, proposing heavy fines of up to 100,000 RMB (approximately 20,000 AUD) on homestay and online tutors to deter extra academic tutoring among kindergarten pupils and primary and middle school students.

A Report on the Digital Development of Global Higher Education was released at the Global MOOC and Online Education Conference 2022 on December 9. It is the world’s first report on higher education digitalisation for which China led the compilation.
The 2022 International Chinese Language Education Conference was held on 8 December. Chinese Vice-premier Sun Chunlan addressed the forum and said that China is willing to cooperate extensively with governments, schools, enterprises and social organisations to promote high quality development of international Chinese language education overseas.
The Global MOOC and Online Education Conference 2022 was held online from 8 to 9 December, hosted by the Global MOOC and Online Education Alliance and the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education. The theme of the conference this year was “Digital Transformation of Education for the Future”.

The Shanghai Institute of Teacher Education (unofficial translation of 上海市教师教育学院）was officially launched in late November 2022. The institute is the first provincial level teacher college in China and aims to provide training to teachers for preschool, compulsory and higher education.

On 8 December, academic consultancy ShanghaiRanking released its latest Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments. Deakin University from Australia is ranked first place in the world. Seven universities from the Chinese mainland are included in the list, and Shanghai University of Sport enters the global top 50 for the first time.
