Upcoming Conferences

Dr. Michael Retallick and Dr. Greg Miller from Iowa State University will be attending and promoting the inaugural conference of the African Plant Breeders Association (APBA) at the University of Ghana from October 23-25th, 2019.

While at the conference, Dr. Retallick and Dr. Miller will be conducting workshops in (1) engaging students, (2) lesson planning, and (3) improving lectures. Stop by and say hello if you will be attending the conference!

Continuing the Work of PLC

The PBEA-PLC program may have drawn to a close, but the impacts that it has had will continue on in the classrooms and the relationships that this program have created. One way that you can keep this project going is to SHARE it! Please share the video attached with friends, colleagues, and students. Let's get the word out into the world about the great work that this association of professionals has conducted!!

Take Ownership of Your Mentoring

Building relationships and creating a network of skilled professionals is a great way to further a career and improve job performance. Mentors provide helpful feedback, suggestions for improvement, and an ally who values your ongoing learning and growth.

A mentoring map is a great tool that can help you track the connections you make and develop strategies to find the support you need. Take a look at the mentoring map sample provided by the Earth Science Women's Network (https://eswnonline.org/in-person/networking/).

Each of the different categories included in the model fits into a different individual mentoring need.

For example, mentors who would fit into the Internal Mentors category would be responsible for ensuring that you are aware of upcoming opportunities for growth: workshops, conferences, speaking opportunities, job openings, or research collaborations.

Find the right person for each category gives you a network of people to call on when you need vent without judgement (Safe Space Category), bounce ideas off someone (Intellectual Community Category), or if you need someone to lobby for you to earn promotions or put your name up for consideration in projects (Sponsorship Category).

Consider the resources in your life, and start designing your own Mentoring Map!
