Pastor Mark Solyst: I invite you to "The American Dream: Why is it harder than ever to achieve?", the fifth of seven community conversations. The American Dream – the ability of each generation to earn more than their parents – is harder to achieve than ever before. This economics phenomenon is fundamentally the result of slower economic growth and growth that is less equitable shared among all Americans. While these trends have been gathering steam the last 20 years, Economists are only now beginning to understand the persistent nature of these changes. Dr. Taggert Brooks will discuss some of the possible solutions that have been proposed even if we have not yet fully reached consensus on all of the causes.
Dr. Brooks received his Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee in 1999.
He is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Economics at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. He is also principal owner of Taggert Brooks Economic Consulting. His research interests cover a wide variety of topics, including the business cycle, regional banking, and the economics of health. His work has been published in several scholarly journals, including his most recent, a cross-country study of the path of GDP’s response to a currency crisis. In the past he has taught macro theory, money and banking and this semester finds himself teaching business research methods. He is frequently interviewed on local television, Wisconsin Public Radio, and has had his work featured in the Economist.
Through these public conversations each month, we intend to strengthen our community by engaging citizens in thoughtful, theological, non-partisan and non-political conversations about local economic and social issues. Conversations are held at noon on the third Wednesday of each month at English Lutheran Church.
