Service Learning Trip to Peru
Your son or daughter has the chance to travel on a trip of a lifetime to… Service Learning and Language Immersion in Peru by at least one teacher who is impressed by his or her character and dedication to academics. There is very limited space with only 14 spots available on a first-come, first-serve basisWe are holding a mandatory meeting for those who are interested in learning more about this opportunity.

Familiarize yourself with life in Peru, the third largest country in South America, through hands-on service projects and authentic interactions with locals. As you work together with locals on a series of small community-based service projects, you’ll be immersed in the culture, expanding your fluency, and experiencing life as the Peruvians do. And, you’ll return home with a better understanding of what meaningful service means to you in an interconnected world.

We are hosting a mandatory enrollment meeting on Thursday, May 16 at 6:00 pm in Portable 6 to answer all your questions.

Last week we inducted 71 new members to the OHMS National Junior Honor Society. This class is already looking to be a hard working, service oriented group! This past Monday they worked hard after-school mulching our front lawn to help our trees stay strong and healthy.  We are looking forward to their service and leadership next school year as 8th graders! Thanks to our PTA president Tammy Cochran for helping out with the organization of this fun event.

Hello World - After-school Computer Science Program - Fall 2019 Details

Given the great response we've received from the students and families engaged in the Hello World program, their team will be returning again this Fall 2019! The program will be starting earlier than usual (first day is September 11th!) and we’re sharing this note now so families can plan ahead.

Hello World is an after-school computer science / coding program comprised of engineers from companies including Amazon, Apple, and Facebook. All courses are taught by professional software engineers, AI architects, and data scientists and are modeled after college computer science courses, particularly those at Rice University, a partnering institution.

To learn more about the Fall 2019 program, join Hello World for their Open House + Family Orientation taking place on Wednesday, September 4th @ 4:00pm OR 5:00pm (choose one option) at O. Henry Middle School (families will be directed to the exact location at front entrance).

The Fall 2019 program is centered around two computer science subjects for all students – Game Engineering, which will be taught by professional game developers, and Web Development, which will be taught by professional full-stack web developers. Students will be building real games and publishing websites and because all course materials mirror industry standards, students can continue to build their knowledge after the semester program ends. Hello World courses cover various major programming languages (HTML/CSS/JavaScript, C#, C/C++, Java, Python, and Swift) which are scoped out in 15 levels of achievement across all programming languages, starting with Level 1 (beginner) up to what is called Acumen (Level 15), which is equivalent to taking several graduate-level courses in that programming language. Given this and the self-paced nature of the program, returning students will only gain exposure to new curriculum and computer science concepts as they move up the levels. The program is open to all levels, including beginners, and students will be placed in levels based on previous exposure to coding / computer science concepts.

We strongly encourage girls to join the program - early exposure to computer science and engineering concepts improves confidence in the field and significantly increases students' likelihood of majoring in these subjects in college! Please reach out to with any questions.

  • Wednesdays 3:45-5:45pm at O. Henry Middle School

  • 10-week course from Wednesday, September 11 - Wednesday, November 13

  • Fall semester tuition: $500

  • See program overview and student’s coding projects here (all code done by students!)

  • Enroll here

  • Mid-semester Event @ UTCS - Hello World is partnering with UT's Department of Computer Science in October of 2019 to provide an immersive and explorative experience for students. More details to come soon!

  • Student Demo Day @ Google - Student Demo Day, where all students present a favorite piece of computer science work, takes place at the Google offices in downtown Austin. Date to be confirmed, but likely on Saturday, November 16th.
