Warm Zazen

Not Always So, chapter "Be Kind with Yourself"

We put emphasis on warm heart, warm zazen. Then warm feeling we have in our practice is, in other words, enlightenment or Buddha's mind. 

Even though you sit, trying to have the right posture and counting your breath, it may still be lifeless zazen, because you are just following instructions. You are not kind enough with yourself. The purpose of instruction is to encourage you to be kind with yourself.

Do not count your breaths just to avoid your thinking mind but to take the best care of your breathing. If you are very kind with your breathing, one breath after another, you will have a refreshed, warm feeling in your zazen. When you have a warm feeling for your body and your breath, then you can take care of your practice, and you will be fully satisfied. When you are very kind with yourself, naturally you will feel like this.

When you do something with a warm-hearted feeling, Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of wisdom, is there, and there is the true you. When you do things with your warm-hearted mind, that is actual practice.

Zoom link for Wednesday meditation

The Lincoln Zen Center remains temporarily closed in light of current health concerns surrounding COVID-19. 

In the meantime, join us for meditation online on Zoom at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays. Meditation will include one 25-minute sit followed by a five-minute walking meditation. Join us on Wednesdays by clicking the  Zoom link.

Monday Evening Online Meditation

We started offering an additional online meditation every Monday at 6pm in the same format as the Wednesday evening online meditation.  The Zoom link will be announced prior to the meditation.

As a reminder, please note that meditation at the Zen Center will now involve reciting the Verse Of Atonement before the first seated meditation:

(recited three times, hands in Gassho)
ALL MY ANCIENT TWISTED KARMA
FROM BEGININNGLESS GREED, HATE AND DELUSION
BORN OF BODY, SPEECH, AND MIND,
I NOW FULLY ATONE.

Following seated meditation and before the dharma reading, we will recite the Verse Before The Dharma Talk:

(recited three times, hands in Gassho)
THE DHARMA IS VAST AND SUBTLE
WE NOW HAVE A CHANCE TO HEAR IT,
STUDY IT, AND PRACTICE IT.
WE VOW TO REALIZE ITS TRUE MEANING.

Before closing each meditation session, we recite the Four Bodhisattva Vows:

(recited three times, hands in Gassho)
CREATIONS ARE NUMBERLESS,
I VOW TO FREE THEM.
DELUSIONS ARE INEXHAUSTIBLE,
I VOW TO TRANSFORM THEM.
REALITY IS BOUNDLESS,
I VOW TO PERCEIVE IT.
THE AWAKENED WAY IS UNSURPASSABLE,
I VOW TO EMBODY IT.

 The Four Bodhisattva Vows will be followed by the Evening Verse, recited once by the doan:

LET ME RESPECTFULLY REMIND YOU:
LIFE AND DEATH ARE OF SUPREME IMPORTANCE.
TIME PASSES SWIFTLY BY AND OPPORTUNITY IS LOST
LET US AWAKEN, AWAKEN - TAKE HEED
DO NOT SQUANDER YOUR LIFE
