Just Bow

Putting my right and left hands together as one, I just bow.
Just bow to become one with Buddha and God.
Just bow to become one with everything I encounter.
Just bow to become one with all the myriad things.
Just bow as life becomes life.

- Kosho Uchiyama's final poem, completed on the day that he died.

Dharma Talk

Bodhisattva Vows (and appropriate responses)

Mindfulness must be engaged. Once there is seeing, there must be acting. Otherwise, what’s the use of seeing?” – Thich Nhat Hanh

In this Dharma talk, Sensei Hozan Alan Senauke talks about appropriate responses, political activism in Buddhism, John Lewis, voting and the upcoming election.

Monday Evening Online Meditation

Starting Monday, 8/17, we will offer an additional online meditation every Monday at 6pm in the same format as the Wednesday evening online meditation.  The Zoom link will be announced prior to the meditation.

UPDATED CHANTS

As a reminder, please note that meditation at the Zen Center will now involve reciting the Verse Of Atonement before the first seated meditation:

(recited three times, hands in Gassho)
ALL MY ANCIENT TWISTED KARMA
FROM BEGININNGLESS GREED, HATE AND DELUSION
BORN OF BODY, SPEECH, AND MIND,
I NOW FULLY ATONE.

Following seated meditation and before the dharma reading, we will recite the Verse Before The Dharma Talk:

(recited three times, hands in Gassho)
THE DHARMA IS VAST AND SUBTLE
WE NOW HAVE A CHANCE TO HEAR IT,
STUDY IT, AND PRACTICE IT.
WE VOW TO REALIZE ITS TRUE MEANING.

Before closing each meditation session, we recite the Four Bodhisattva Vows:

(recited three times, hands in Gassho)
CREATIONS ARE NUMBERLESS,
I VOW TO FREE THEM.
DELUSIONS ARE INEXHAUSTIBLE,
I VOW TO TRANSFORM THEM.
REALITY IS BOUNDLESS,
I VOW TO PERCEIVE IT.
THE AWAKENED WAY IS UNSURPASSABLE,
I VOW TO EMBODY IT.

The Four Bodhisattva Vows will be followed by the Evening Verse, recited once by the doan:

LET ME RESPECTFULLY REMIND YOU:
LIFE AND DEATH ARE OF SUPREME IMPORTANCE.
TIME PASSES SWIFTLY BY AND OPPORTUNITY IS LOST
LET US AWAKEN, AWAKEN - TAKE HEED
DO NOT SQUANDER YOUR LIFE
