How to avoid an unclaimed property audit

How to avoid an
unclaimed property audit —

and the hefty fines that could go along with it

You know about the Great Colorado Payback, right? It’s the place where the state centralizes abandoned property and tries to return it to its rightful owner. Its intentions are good, but did you know that as an auto dealer, the law requires you to turn over all your unclaimed property to the state? And then you need to file a report that lists the unclaimed property — every year?

No? Well how about this: Failing to do so could lead to an audit or civil penalties. In fact some dealers in the Denver metro area have already received ‘the letter.’

Don’t be one of them.

You'll Learn:
  • What unclaimed property is and which types auto dealers typically hold

  • The different types of unclaimed property and the dormancy period for eachHow to file an annual report with the Unclaimed Property Office

Larry H. Miller Dealerships donates $10,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver during ‘5 Weeks of Giving’

Representatives from Larry H. Miller Dealerships will present a check for $10,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver on Wednesday, November 22 as part of the dealership group’s “5 Weeks of Giving.” The campaign is an effort to help enrich the lives of Coloradans throughout the holiday season.

The $10,000 grant will help support the after-school programs and operations of the newest Boys & Girls Club in Green Valley Ranch, which opened its doors in August. The after-school programs focus on academics and career readiness, character and leadership development and health and wellness. The expansion of the Boys & Girls Club provides a safe, accessible space in communities of need where kids can access increased opportunities to learn, grow and develop while having fun, as well as receive positive recognition and reinforcement.

The donation is being presented at 3:30 p.m. at the Johnson Boys & Girls Club; 3325 W. 16th Ave.; Denver, CO 80204. Larry H. Miller dealership employees across Colorado are presenting more than $60,000 in monetary donations to various charitable programs, conducting collection drives in support of children and families and volunteering their time in the communities they serve.

Assistance from Larry H. Miller Charities, the charitable arm of the dealership group, is directed toward women and children’s programs, with an emphasis on health and education. In large part, funds are generated through employee contributions.

Regulatory & Compliance

Call Your Senator TODAY to
Preserve Deductibility of Floor Plan
Interest in Tax Reform Bill

It’s imperative that we as a community of auto dealers and dealership employees take collective action to educate lawmakers regarding a major threat to dealerships that is included in the current version of the Senate tax bill.

As currently written, the Senate’s tax bill would limit the deductibility of business interest, including floor plan interest, to 30 percent of adjusted taxable income. As interest rates increase, this would result in dealers paying higher taxes even when a dealership does not show a profit. This is a tax increase for your business and could be especially devastating to cash flow, particularly to many of our smaller members, during an economic downturn.

The Senate tax reform bill is still being drafted and could be voted on as early as this week.

Federated Insurance’s – It's Your Life

Hire a Specialist!
Your life’s work should not be left to chance

If a family member had a serious heart condition that required surgery, we would surely seek out the best cardiovascular specialist available to perform the operation. The same should hold true when seeking advice on our estate and business succession plans.

Our families and businesses deserve the benefit of expert advice. We need legal advisors and other facilitators specifically trained and experienced in dealing with the estates of business owners. Many lawyers who are general practitioners are adept in handling common legal affairs. But, few of them would attempt to develop a sophisticated estate plan that could provide the specialized legal documents you may need. Just as we would not likely ask our family doctor to perform open heart surgery, neither should we assume that a generalist attorney is qualified to develop a complex estate and business succession plan.

In addition to technical expertise, estate-planning attorneys often have developed the skill to explain complex issues to us in understandable terms. Since these attorneys regularly deal with multifaceted challenges facing family business owners, they can focus on listening. And because they may be more skilled and experienced in working with other advisors, they have a greater ability to direct the planning process to a successfuland cost- effectiveoutcome.

Federated is committed to helping family business owners complete this important planning. This is why our marketing representatives can help our clients locate attorneys specializing in estate planning and personally help facilitate much of the “leg work” that can make the process go more smoothly. Your local Federated representative would be happy to visit with you about this.

After all, your life’s work should not be left to chance.

We’re shooting for new heights — and with your help, EVERYONE wins!
