Early bird registration ends September 30! Register now for the CADA Annual Convention in Kaua’i!

Join us November 11-14 for the CADA Annual Convention at the Grand Hyatt Kaua’I Resort and Spa!

There’ll be great keynote speakers… Like Michael Hoffman, who will kick off the convention Monday morning with a dynamic discussion on leading through the tornado.

Say what?

We’re all working faster, harder and seemingly 24/7. As a leader, you have a huge amount of influence on the corporate ‘culture’ of your dealership. Your own key leaders and employees listen to what you say and watch what you do to guide them in how they themselves act at work. After all, corporate culture is all about what we say and what we do.

His expertise in tactical communications draws leaders out of the tornado with ideas that stick around with you long after the convention has ended. Michael’s highly interactive presentation will have you taking a look at the skill sets we take for granted, turn the knob 90 degrees and offer a better customer experience, for example. “We are the masters of the tornado if we do it on purpose,” he said.

For more than 20 years, he’s been helping companies build sales, radically shift their cultures, develop their leaders and engage employees in delivering true customer service. Liberally sprinkled throughout with entertaining stories that will make you nod your head — or even laugh out loud, because you recognize yourself in just that situation, Michael will have you thinking more about your own effect on your team!

Closing out our education Tuesday morning is CADA’s Keynote speaker, Jason Stein. The vice president and publisher of Automotive News shares key insights on where the industry is today, where it’s going and dealers’ opportunities for the future. Electric vehicles. Self-driving vehicles. Alternative fuel-driven vehicles. Ride sharing. Market share for cars, trucks, SUVs. Technology. If it’s related to new vehicles, Jason has the insight. Jason joined Automotive News as a Detroit-based reporter in October 2003; he quickly rose through the ranks to lead the editorial and commercial operations for one of the world’s largest automotive business-to-business media organizations. You’ll leave his session with ideas on how you can capitalize on trends — some of which may not even be worth more than a mention today.

4 Simple rules to prevent cyber phishing attacks at your dealership

Have you or anyone on your sales team ever received an e-mail from another dealer who wants to look at a vehicle you have on the lot? Chances are that you have. It’s something that happens thousands of times a day across the country. There’s a whole business built on accessing sensitive information in your database through such a seemingly innocuous — and common — activity.

It’s called cyber phishing and auto dealerships across the country have been identified as ‘easy’ targets for these aggressive cyber phishers. And once they have access to your database, cyber phishers hold it for ransom, usually for tens of thousands of dollars, yet some dealerships have paid much more than that. If you’ve been cyber phished, it will bring your business to its knees.

There are actions you can take right now to prevent that from happening to your dealership. Please join CADA on Wednesday, October 10, from 10 – 11:30 a.m. for the special webinar, 4 Simple rules to prevent cyber phishing attacks at your dealership. This webinar is designed for dealers, general managers, sales managers, controllers and CFOs. (And because it’s a webinar, you might want your sales team to sit in on it, too.) For more info on the webinar, click here.

Clear the Air Foundation awards first tools grant to Eric Woodbury
To say Eric ‘Woody’ Woodbury was excited about receiving the Clear the Air Foundation’s first ever tool scholarship would be a huge understatement. The single father of two five-year-old children works full time at Markey Honda in Fort Collins AND attends Front Range Community College, where he’s on track to graduate with an automotive technician degree next year.

Through its partnership with Snap-on Tools, the Clear the Air Foundation gave Woody a $2,500 tool scholarship. But it didn’t stop there. Because Snap-on Tools’ Student Excellence Program offers Front Range Community College auto tech students a 50 percent discount, that $2,500 scholarship translates to $5,000 worth of tools for Woody’s toolbox.

For his part, Woody said, “I found my calling here. I love the fact that I can fix things and make a living from it.”
Regulatory & legal updates
New! FCRA Summary of Consumer Rights Document
Effective Immediately
If you conduct background checks on applicants or employees, you’ll need to use an updated “A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)” document. This change was one of the results of recent high-profile data breaches and Congress passing the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act.

Highlights:
  • Start using the new FCRA consumer rights summary by Friday, September 21, 2018.
  • The updated document informs people of their right to freeze their credit and obtain fraud alerts.
  • The new document will be available in HRDrive®. Find it in the Toolkit tab > Documents > Hiring Documents > FCRA Rights. You can also download it now.
  • If you use HRDrive as part of your integrated hiring process, the correct form is automatically used.

Record Number of Security Breaches in 2018

There have been several high-profile data security and data exposure breaches in 2018 — everything from Russian power grid hacking and more, to 300 universities in the U.S. and abroad being infiltrated, to Equifax’s massive breach that impacted 2.4 million Americans. The United States Congress responded by passing the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act.

Among other provisions, this legislation requires credit bureaus to provide fraud alerts, free national security freezes, and freeze releases for consumers. These measures may thwart identity thieves and hackers from opening unauthorized accounts in consumers’ names.

Where Employers Factor In…
As part of this same federal law, background screening providers and employers that conduct background checks were also given marching orders.

Under an “interim final rule,” the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) released an updated FCRA consumer rights summary on Wednesday, September 12 and gave employers a little over a week to adjust course.

What is the FCRA Consumer Rights Summary?
If you use a third-party provider or if an employer is going to take adverse action against an applicant or employee (a.k.a., decline to hire the applicant) as a result of something revealed in their background check, the applicant or employee needs to receive a FCRA consumer rights summary. It explains a person’s rights to obtain and dispute information contained within a consumer report (i.e., background check).

What Changed?
The CFPB added 3 additional paragraphs to the FCRA consumer rights summary. They explain people’s right to place a security freeze on their credit reports. The new text also talks about initial, 1-year fraud alerts and extended fraud alerts, which require parties using credit reports to take additional steps to verify someone’s identity.

What Do You Need to Do to Comply?
  • Start using the new document by Friday, September 21.
  • Ensure that your background screening provider is using the right version of the FCRA consumer rights summary.
  • Download the FCRA Rights in HRDrive in the Toolkit tab > Documents > Hiring Documents or right now.
  •  If you use HRDrive as part of your integrated hiring process, the correct form is automatically used.
  • If your state has ban the box legislation in play, follow all applicable regulations.
Questions?
For additional information regarding the FCRA consumer rights summary, please contact your background screening provider or KPA’s Client Success Center at 800-486-0400 or email hrsupport@kpaonline.com.
