Q: What is Self Defense?
A: Self Defense is 90% Awareness skills and 10% Physical Engagement which is why ISMA focuses not only on the physical self defense techniques, but methods to enhance a student's Awareness training. Awareness has to start from within by knowing oneself and being grounded and balanced (mentally, physically, and emotionally) before it can expand outwardly into confidence and making good decisions. In addition to a student developing confidence, they also work on quick hand-eye, foot-eye, distancing, timing, speed, and reflexes to enhance the physical self defense techniques. This training is often developed through drills and hidden in game play.
