VOICE unveils 2017 Arctic priorities

Voice of the Arctic Iñupiat held its biannual board meeting last month in Barrow, AK. One of the purposes of the meeting was to discuss 2017 priorities for VOICE and its 20 member organizations. The five overarching priorities for this year are:

    •    Strengthen unity amongst Arctic communities, tribes, organizations, etc.
    •    Educate and raise awareness about issues affecting the Arctic
    •    Promote responsible resource development and economic sustainability
    •    Ensure sound subsistence management/food security
    •    Address social issues in Arctic communities

Arctic Dialogue: Sustainable Development Goals

On March 4th, state leaders from across Alaska convened to discuss a set of sustainable development goals for northern communities – originally put forth by the United Nations in 2015. The seventeen goals cover a broad range of issues from education and innovation to climate change and sustainability. The purpose of the meeting was to consider the UN goals in a northern context through which Alaska could view its own priorities.

Sayers Tuzroyluk, president of Voice of the Arctic Iñupiat and a resident of Point Hope, AK was the sole participant from an Arctic community. Here’s a glimpse of what he had to say –

“Our people rely on development; sustaining the economy supports our culture and ability to subsist. We are at the point today where we can’t have one without the other. We can’t go back in time to when we used to have dog sleds to get around.”

“My region is the focus of climate change. The ENGO’s [Environmental Non-Governmental Organization’s] first thought is to protect the polar bears before thinking of the people that have lived there for thousands of years.”
