1.  Notice of Elections


The Graduate Students' Association is pleased to announce that we will be holding our Elections for the 2017-2018 school year.  Please note that nominations for all positions (see below) will open on February 13, 2017 and will close on March 20th, 2017 at 4:30 PM.  

Elections will take place from March 27th to 29th, 2017.

1.  Avis d'élections

L'Association des étudiant(e)s aux études supérieures est heureuse d'annoncer que nous tiendrons nos élections pour l'année scolaire 2017-2018.  SVP notez que la mise en candidature pour tous les postes (voir ci-dessous) sera ouverte le 13 février 2017 et va fermer le 20 mars 2017 à 16h30.  

Les élections vont avoir lieu du 27 au 29 mars 2017.

2. Spring Fling

Spring is in the air, midterms are over, and the end of the winter term is near.  It is time once again for the GSA Spring Social.  A chance to unwind with your fellow grad students with great food, great company and of course awesome door prizes.

2. Gala du printemps

Le printemps est dans l'air, les examens sont terminés et la fin de l'année scolaire approche.  Il est temps encore une fois pour le gala du printemps de l'AÉÉS. Venez vous détendre avec vos collègues en dégustant de la bonne bouffe en bonne compagnie et gagner des prix.

3. UFileFree - UFile ONLINE for FREE

Students file free regardless of their income
File online on time- FOR FREE!
 
The Canadian Federation of Students and UFile ONLINE have joined together to provide FREE online tax preparation and filing for all Canadian post-secondary students.
 
To be eligible for this special offer...
You must be a resident of Canada, have tuition fees and have attended school for at least one month during the tax year being prepared.  You must also be designated as the FAMILY HEAD (primary member of the family) for purposes of your tax file in UFile.

To take advantage of this offer...
  • Sign in to a new or existing UFile account for the current tax year.
  • Enter your tuition fees and months at school and click NEXT.
  • Locate the "Special offer" from in UFile's left hand navigation.  (You may need to scroll down the screen.)
  • Enter the following Canadian Federation of Students "Free for Students" special offer code:  CFS1981
  • Click NEXT.
  • Enter the rest of your tax information and then you can print or NETFILE your return whenever you are ready - free of charge!

La Fédération canadienne des étudiantes et étudiants et ImpôtExpert EN LIGNE ont décidé de faire équipe pour offrir la préparation et la production des déclarations de revenus GRATUITEMENT à tous les étudiants canadiens de niveau postsecondaire.  

Pour être admissible à cette offre spéciale, vous devez être résident du Canada, avoir des frais de scolarité et avoir fréquenté l'école pendant au moins un mois durant l'année d'imposition.  Vous devez également être CHEF DE FAMILLE (le membre principal de la famille) aux fins de votre dossier dans ImpôtExpert.
 
Pour vous prévaloir de cette offre...
  • Créez un nouveau compte sur ImpôtExpert.ca ou ouvrez une session dans un compte existant pour l'année d'imposition concernée.
  • Saisissez vos frais de scolarité, indiquez les mois passés aux études et cliquez sur SUIVANT.
  • Repérez la page réservée aux offres spéciales dans le menu de gauche d'ImpôtExpert. (Vous pourriez devoir défiler vers le bas de l'écran.)

5.  The Lake Shift 2017

Where:  Queen's University Biology Research Station (QUBS) on Lake Opinicon.

When:  Sunday July 9th (mid-day) to Friday (1:00) July 14th, 2017

The Lake Shift is a thesis writing retreat for graduate students from Ontario universities.  The five day retreat for 2017 will run from Sunday evening, July 9th to Friday afternoon, July 14th, at the Queen's Biology Station on Lake Opinicon (a 50 minute drive north of Kingston).  The retreat provides graduate students with structured time to write, workshops on tips for effective dissertation writing, opportunities to network with other graduate students and all in a beautiful location.  The objective of the retreat is to enable graduate students to make substantial progress in writing their thesis and to develop foundations to maintain that momentum.  The fringe benefits of The Lake Shift include swimming, boating, hiking and  campfire conversations and make for a balance of the cerebral with the physical and social for a well-rounded experience.

1.  Laurentian Multicultural Club presents
Dinner and Performance Mixer


The Laurentian Multicultural Club will be hosting a Dinner and Performance Mixer on Friday March 24th from 7pm-12am at the Kingsmen room in the YMCA. 

The night will consist of dinner: buffet style foods from India, Italy, Mexico and Egypt!

There will also be student performances (we are also currently looking for performers). Followed by a dance.
We encourage students to come dressed in any cultural attire. 

Ticket sales will occur on March 8th and 10th in front of the library from 10am-3pm and are priced at $20 each. We will also be selling tickets in the following weeks at a to be determined time and place. If you, or anyone you know, wants to buy a ticket but can't meet us at the times listed, then send me an email or a facebook message.

This event is also open to Cambrian College and College Boreal students!

We hope to see you there!

2.  Canada's IDDIP call for Applications - Summer deployment

These internships provide successful applicants, known as Junior Professional Consultants (JPCs), with invaluable, demanding, deeply meaningful work experience, as well as a proven bridge to employment.  The Program also provides professional development training & support including:  job readiness, professional resumé preparation; access to our exclusive mentorship program before, during and after their deployments.  Now in its 21st year of investing in talented young Canadians, IDDIP is proud to continue sending Canada's best and brightest graduates and young professionals to UN and other international Agencies around the world on six-month internships.

Eligibility/Quick Facts:
  • No application or administrative fee, however the internships are unpaid, and successful candidates must cover living costs, flights, etc.
  • The application deadline is March 6th, 2017.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • 98% of our JPCs find meaningful work in their field, or return to advanced studies, within four months of completing their internship - acting as a proven bridge to employment.
  • Internships are typically six-months in length with Agencies such as:  UNDP, IOM, UNODC, UNICEF, UNGEI, UN Women, UNHCR. 
  • The majority of UNA-Canada's internship opportunities require a completed university bachelor degree.  A few opportunities require applicants to be currently enrolled at a recognized university, thus 4th year students, may apply knowing there are limited opportunities available.  The majority of our successful candidates are current, or graduated, graduate students.
  • Successful applicants will be deployed in May, June and July, 2017 depending on the needs of partner Agencies.
