Safer City Streets, the new global traffic safety network for liveable cities, was launched on 18 October during the UN Habitat III conference in Quito, Ecuador. Safer City Streets is managed by the International Transport Forum and it is built for cities to share their experience and learn from each other. Cities address many challenges by working together and learning from each other – but so far not in road safety. Safer City Streets fills this gap by linking cities that are working to make their citizens safer in traffic. It provides city officials high-value information for better decision making, global networking and learning opportunities for city officials and the possibility to carry out research on topics of common interest. Member cities have access to policy-relevant data, a network of experts and targeted analysis. link link

The International Transport Forum has recently published an evidenced based Research Report titled “Zero Road Deaths and Serious Injuries: Leading a Paradigm Shift to a Safe System“, prepared by the Safe System Implementation Working Group composed by international road safety experts including NTUA Prof. George Yannis. This ITF Safe System Report was presented at a dedicated Road Safety Seminar, held with great success on 3 October 2016 in Paris France. This Report is relying on experiences in ITF/OECD countries, with practical policy recommendations for the attention of policy makers on the various steps in implementing a safe system approach. A Safe System is based on the premise that road crashes are both predictable and preventable, and that it is possible to move towards zero road deaths and serious injuries. This, however, requires a fundamental rethink of the governance and implementation of road safety policy. link

The 1st edition of the European Road Infrastructure Congress organised by the European Union Road Federation, in partnership with the Road Safety Markings Association, took place with great success in Leeds, on 18-20 October 2016. The Congress brought together more than 500 policy makers, academics, research institutes, road authorities and industry representatives from across the continent to explore the following three overarching themes: 1. Delivery of the road infrastructure, 2. Road Safety, 3. Adaptation of the road infrastructure.

A new Report “Investing to prevent road trauma saves lives and pays financial dividends” launched by FIA Foundation on 22nd September 2016 during the iRAP Innovation Workshop hosted by the World Bank in Washington DC, presenting findings to representatives of development banks, philanthropies and road authorities. The new report builds on the last year’s Report: Breaking the Deadlock: A Social Impact Investment Lens on Reducing Costs of Road Trauma and Unlocking Capital for Road Safety and is part of the FIA Foundation’s ‘Financing for Development’ series of policy and research papers. link

A new Road Safety overlay feature to the Travel Risk Map has been recently launched by the International SOS Foundation, working in collaboration with GRSP and utilizing data from the WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety 2015. The interactive Travel Risk Map has been a widely used resource for business travellers in understanding the risks posed when visiting or relocating to foreign countries in terms of travel security and medical risk. The addition of the Road Safety Risk overlay will serve to educate the mobile workforce to be more aware of the vast differences in road traffic environments from country to country. 

Selected papers of the Transport Research Arena Conference which took place in Paris in 2014 are now published by ISTE/Wiley. A special volume co-edited by NTUA Prof. George Yannis, and ENPC Prof. Simon Cohen is dedicated to Traffic Safety, containing theoretical chapters and practical case studies addressing topics such as road safety management and policies, accident analysis and modeling, vulnerable road users’ safety, road infrastructure safety, ITS and railway safety.  doi

ITF / IRTAD together with the Horizons 2020 project SaferAfrica organised a workshop regarding Road Safety in Africa which took place with great success on 12 October 2016, at Sapienza University of Rome, The workshop focused on “Fostering strategic cooperation between Africa and Europe on road safety” and it included two sessions: 1. Road safety policies and strategies and 2. Support for the road safety improvement in Africa. pdf5

The European Traffic Police Network (TISPOL) together with the European Commission DG Move Road Safety Unit have launched the project EDWARD – the European Day Without A Road Death 2016, which took place with great success on 21 September 2016. This day there were 43 road deaths across 31 countries, compared to 70 fatalities on the same day in 2015 (reduction of almost 39%) with 19 countries recording zero fatalities on 21 September, compared with 11 countries in 2015. Project EDWARD also featured a road safety pledge asking road users to promise to: drive at speeds that are both legal and safe, pay particular attention when driving near schools, never drive after drinking alcohol or taking drugs/medicines, always wear seat belt and not using mobile phone while driving. link


The 5th Panhellenic Interdisciplinary Conference of Special Psychiatric Hospitals and the 3rd Panhellenic Conference of Holistic Addressing with Severe Mental Disorder took place with great success in Kalamata, from 29th September to 2nd October, 2016. pdf5

The Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers (HITE) and the Hellenic Institute of Transport (H.I.T.) co-organize the 8th International Congress on Transport Research (ICTR), which will be held on 28-29 September 2017, in Thessaloniki, Greece. The spotlight theme of the 2017 Congress is: The Future of Transportation in Greece: A Vision for 2030. The ICTR has been a major event in the field of transportation research in Greece for the past 15 years with the active contribution of the research and academic community, the authorities as well as the public and private sector involved in the development and implementation of innovative projects in the field of transport. The deadline for abstract submission is set for December 15th, 2016. 

The PhD Dissertation of Dr. Panagiotis Papantoniou at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, titled: ‘Risk factors, driver behaviour and accident probability. The case of distracted driving‘ has been awarded winning dissertation of the European Friedrich-List-Award 2016 and the European Platform of Transport Sciences (EPTS).  ppt5
A Diploma Thesis titled ‘Analysis of aggressive driving characteristics in Greece‘ was presented by Eva Kalpaxidi in July 2016. The aim of the present Diploma Thesis is the analysis of the characteristics of aggressive driving in Greece exploiting the Pan-European survey of road user’s attitudes: ESRA. Factor Analysis as well as Binary Logistic Regression and Negative Binomial Regression Models were developed in order to demonstrate the correlation between aggressive driving, police checks and the number of accidents caused by aggressive driving. The statistical models developed demonstrated that gender and age play a major role in aggressive driving, the majority of the drivers take positions against speeding and aggressive driving is described by three different characteristics: actions against other drivers, negative feelings and risk-taking actions while driving.  pdf5 ppt5
A paper titled ‘Mobile phone use, speed and accident probability of young drivers‘ authored by George Yannis, Leonidas Roumpas and Eleonora Papadimitriou is now published in Advances in Transportation Studies. A driving simulator experiment was carried out, in which young participants drove in different driving scenarios: urban and interurban areas, good or rainy weather, with or without the occurrence of unexpected incidents. Log-normal linear regression waw used to analyze the influence of mobile phone use and other parameters on the mean speed of drivers, whereas binary logistic regression was used to analyze the influence of mobile phone, change in speed and other parameters on accident probability. The results suggest that mobile phone use leads to statistically significant overall decrease of the mean speed. However, some drivers increased their speed during the mobile phone conversation, a case which has received little attention in the literature. Mobile phone use leads to significant increase of accident probability, indicating that the speed reduction when using a mobile phone is not sufficient to counterbalance the overall increased risk, especially when an unexpected incident occurs. doi
