Pastor Jim Lorenz, Northern California Ministerial Director, wrote this article and is allowing us to share it in our Newsletter because we need to help people not to fall into this trap.

Are Our Critics Right?

I used to really chafe when someone would describe the Adventist church as being legalistic, but after over 25 years in ministry, I'm wondering if our critics are at least partially right--not about our doctrine of salvation, but about how too many of our members view salvation.

When I preached at an Adventist church in Romania some years ago, I asked the congregation if God loves us more if we keep the 10 Commandments. Most hands went up in the affirmative.

Closer to home, a conference president within the NAD used the rowboat analogy of salvation during a meeting. According to his analogy, one oar is grace and the other oar is our works. This is completely unbiblical! If you do a Google search, you'll likely find that illustration on a Catholic website, which preaches that grace plus merit equals salvation.

Fast forward to a study conducted by Adventists on our view of salvation. It's not pretty. The headline in Christianity Today is: "Many Adventists in Asia and Africa Believe You Must Be Vegan to Be Saved." Sadly, I've pastored some Californians who also thought that. Salvation is the core doctrine of Christianity, and if we are not communicating the gift of grace well, we have to do better!
