Dates: Thursdays Sept 27-Nov. 29 (8 weeks, no course on October 18) 11:15 am -12:15 pm
Location: Chapel, Woodroffe United Church
Cost: $100
This workshop is intended for musicians registered to play in the Intermediate level of the ONHB fall session. Learning how music works ("theory") will help you hear what you play, play what you hear, and make up something original ("composition") to play yourself and perhaps have others play ("orchestration" or "arranging"). This workshop will provide an opportunity to review and confirm what you know, fill in the gaps, and help you improve your ability to hear and understand more about what you play whether in concert band, chamber ensemble, jazz band, or any other group. It's not magic, but it's certain to provide some "aha!" moments. Bring your instrument and questions, and play as you learn.
Learn the construction and sound of:
* major and minor scales
* spelling and hearing intervals
* triads and seventh chords of the major and minor scales
* circle of 5ths/4ths
* basic chord progressions, cadences, tendency tones
* creating melody
* modes of the major scale
To register, send an email by Sept. 20
to
Cathy Wilcox, indicating which band you are currently registered for in the fall session. And bring your cheque made out to Ottawa New Horizons Band (memo line: Music Theory) to Cathy Wilcox or Leslie Scott at the first week of band rehearsal, or mail it to:
