Sunday May 5, 2019 ONHB Intercity Clinic - Save the Date!
Your ONHB team is planning a special half day event this coming May! New Horizons Band Members from Ottawa, Montreal, Peterborough, and Potsdam New York will have an exciting opportunity to come together for an afternoon of making music in one of two bands. The goal of this session will be to experience the joy of making music with a new group of people. Participants will read through and rehearse some new and some familiar concert and jazz band arrangements with New Horizons members and guest band leaders, followed by a restaurant outing.
We are planning this music reading session for the afternoon of Sunday, May 5 at Woodroffe United Church. The tulips may be starting to show their colours in Ottawa, and it will be wonderful to have friends from around the region visit and play music together.
We plan to offer one concert band under the baton of Tessa MacLean, with one or two invited guest conductor appearances, and one jazz band, under local jazz guru Mark Ferguson. Email registration will take place in late March. Space is limited to 120 total participants. We look forward to seeing you!
2020 Band Trip to Europe
After our successful trip to Ireland last June, Ottawa New Horizons is pleased to present the opportunity for another performance trip to Europe. The trip is scheduled to depart June 20, 2020, for Prague, Czech Republic, and will include stays in Prague, Salzburg, Vienna and Budapest, returning home on July 2. Full details will be posted on the ONHB website soon, but in the meantime mark your calendar for one of two information sessions to be presented by a representative from Ellison Travel and Tours, the travel agency arranging the trip. The sessions will last approximately one hour, and will take place on:
1. Wednesday, March 27, 6:00 p.m. in the Staff Room at Brookfield High School.
2. Thursday, March 28, 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Woodroffe United Church.
Call For Volunteers!
As you may know, the Ottawa New Horizons Band (ONHB) is a not for profit organization that very much relies on volunteers - from helping with setting up musical equipment to participating on our board and advisory committees.
Each year we are blessed with an amazing team of volunteers who help in a variety of ways, and Ottawa New Horizons wouldn’t be such a success without them!
We are now looking for additional volunteers who are willing to help us, both in making the May 5, 2019 Clinic a success, and in supporting ONHB’s main activities during the year.
For the May Clinic, we need volunteers in the following roles:
Volunteer coordinator (to coordinate all volunteers and liaise with band leader coordinator Cathy Wilcox)
Registrar (to accept email registrations for the May Clinic);
Event Facilities Coordinator (work with the chosen location, organize teams of volunteers to set up and take down equipment, arrange payment details)
Public Relations (to send invitations, create a poster, etc.)
organizing sheet music for distribution at special events, sessions.
Other volunteer roles which we are looking to fill include:
Refreshments at regular ONHB concerts
Stage management for concerts (set up, rearrangement and take down of chairs and equipment)
Audio/video recording of concerts
Special events, like the May clinic
We also invite you to suggest your own ideas for new ways to volunteer with ONHB!
Volunteering to help ONHB with these activities often only requires a few hours of your time, and is a great way to meet other members and learn how to run an event, as well as how a non profit organization such as ONHB successfully operates.
